IAEVG Conference 2024 Jyväskylä: Practitioners’ perceptions of green guidance
Mariana Lucas Casanova, member of the team of the Exploring Green Guidance project has recently presented the project and some of its results at the IAEVG International Conference 2024 in Jyväskylä, Finland.
This presentation built on the project survey’s descriptive analysis (Hooley et al., 2024) to further explore European practitioners’ perceptions towards climate change and Green Guidance and examine the relationships between these and other variables through structural equation modelling.
The validation of the measures used in the survey was briefly presented, to focus on the results of a theoretical model that seeks to identify variables that may account for practitioners’ openness to green guidance. The model suggests that positive attitudes towards Green Guidance may be impacted by ppractitioners’ beliefs and perceptions on the “reality” of climate change, and their perceptions of their clients’ attitudes towards climate change.
Moreover, considering the concerns expressed by practitioners in the open questions of the survey, findings suggest that, when faced with clients concerned with climate change in relation to career decisions, practitioners’ beliefs do not inflate their openness to Green Guidance, and so, they do not seem to be biased in their practice.
So, these findings suggest that evidence based scientific knowledge on climate change is relevant for career counsellors’ training, which may then impact their openness to Green Guidance and make them more aware of clients’ attitudes needs regarding the relationship between climate change and career development.
